Lifestyle Modification

Adoption of healthy lifestyles is an indispensable part of the management of all patients with high BP.17 Individuals with prehypertension are not candidates for drug therapy but should be firmly and unambiguously advised to practice health-promoting lifestyle modifications in order to reduce their risk of developing HTN in the future. Major lifestyle modifications shown to lower BP include aerobic exercising, e.g., brisk walking for 30 minutes per day, most days of the week; weight reduction (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2); adopting a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products that are rich in potassium and calcium; reduction of dietary sodium; and moderation of alcohol consumption.12,16,17
