Overview

The main goal of this course is to introduce evidence-based information related to procedure-specific and patient-specific variables that may precipitate a major perioperative medical event in patients with endocrine and/or metabolic disorders. Special emphasis is placed on the pharmacology of endocrine and/or metabolic agents, i.e., their mechanisms of action, indications for use, and potential adverse drug effects.

The risk of perioperative medical complications associated with dental treatment depends on procedure-specific and patient-specific risk factors. Important co-determinants of patient-specific risk factors include disease-, pharmacotherapy-, and functional capacity. Information essential for the identification and risk stratification of patients with endocrine and/or metabolic abnormalities is presented based on the top 200 drugs dispensed by U.S. community pharmacies.
