Overview
The global objectives of the course are to present the mechanisms of ADRs characterized by (1) “on-target”, (2) “off-target”, and (3) cytotoxic reactions; provide a clinical frame of reference for ADRs; and to raise the level of awareness of oral healthcare providers of the spectrum of potential ADRs affecting oral tissues and various organ systems.
This course presents the mechanisms of adverse drug reactions (ADRs), the 30 most common ADRs associated with the top 200 drugs dispensed by U.S. community pharmacies, and less common ADRs that relate to dental therapeutics and/or manifest in the head and neck area. Emphasis is on those ADRs that have a pharmacokinetic or a pharmacodynamic basis and, with the exception of overdose, are the result of drug-drug, drug-food, drug-herbal, and drug-disease interactions with therapeutic doses of drugs.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the dental professional should be able to:
- Discuss in general terms the approval process of new drugs and its limitations as they relate to ADRs.
- Discuss “on-target,” “off-target,” and cytotoxic mechanisms of ADRs.
- Develop a clinical frame of reference related to ADRs.
- Discuss the spectrum of potential ADRs affecting the head and neck area and various organ systems associated with dental therapeutics and the top 200 drugs dispensed by U.S. community pharmacies.
