Overview

This course presents the background essential to understand the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in healthcare settings and provides evidence based information related to post-exposure prophylaxis and follow-up.

In the absence of an effective vaccine, exposure prevention is the primary strategy to minimize healthcare-associated HIV transmission. Evidence-based information is provided about potential risks of exposure; procedures that promote a seamless response following occupational exposure; and guidelines to establish graduated clinical privileges predicated on the relative viral load of the infected provider and the likelihood of procedure-related provider-to-patient transmission of HIV.
